A Biography of Neil Wyatt
Born: 1951
Birthplace: Fort Riley, Kansas
Current Residence: High Ridge, Missouri
Neil Wyatt was raised on a small
farm in Northeast Arkansas, near a town called Marmaduke. Boys grow up
fast on the farm, and Neil was no different. Neil was 12 when he and his
brother bought their first pickup truck with money earned from picking
cotton. Much of what Neil learned on the farm in his youth has shaped
his personality and what he is all about today. His lat year on the farm
was 1964, when his father had to go to St. Louis to get a job because
of severe financial difficulties. Neil and the family were left on the
farm to get the crop out. After the work was done, the rest of the family
moved to the big city.
Neil wasn’t crazy about
big city life. Things were different. He was 14 and had been driving for
years, but now he could not. He had to wait until he was 16. He was a
young man matured past his years, and many of the trivial matters that
confront teens in the city were nonsense to him. Never the less, Neil
carved out his place in St. Louis.
Neil graduated from Kirkwood
High School in 1969. He went right to work. He married in 1970. In 1971
the first and only child, Martin was born. In 1979, Neil opened his own
business, Wyatt’s Upholstery. He built the business into one that
is respected and used by many designers and home decorating services in
and around the St. Louis area. He had always had a love for country music
going back to his childhood with memories of barn dances and radio and
television shows. He had no one in his immediate family that was trained
in music or instrumentation but any time there was folks around that were
he would be drawn like a moth to a flame. He always hoped some day that
he would have the time, resources, and hopefully the talent to make his
own music. In the late 1980s he began taking guitar lessons. After learning
a few cords it was obvious to those who were around him at the time that
he had a burning desire and a driving passion to use the music as a way
to express himself.
In the early 1990s Neil started
singing and playing music seriously, and began his song-writing career
after his guitar teacher expressed that he thought Neil had a real knack
for the craft. Tragically inspiration for some of his songs came from
the breakup of his 30-year marriage. But he also draws on his family heritage,
farming background, and lifetime experiences as inspiration for his songs.
Tom T. Hall said that “A man is not writing, if he can’t relate,
to all the things that he sees in his life.” Neil Wyatt is certainly
writing. His music is real country music with lots of soul and feeling.
He released his first CD, Country To The Bone, in 2001. Some of his songs
will tear your heart out, but he also has some fun, upbeat songs.
These days Neil Wyatt is a busy
man. While he continues in the upholstery business, he is also working
on his music career. He has formed a band and has also been doing several
television and radio shows. Neil’s first single was release in March
2002. “Raising Hell Always Comes With A Cost” stayed on the
charts for 22 weeks and went to #4 on Indie World Country Chart. Now the
second release Captain Tom is doing great after 8 weeks it looks to be
on track to be a #1 hit. Neil is singing about three to four nights a
week and continues to write music. He says he would do it for free if
he had to cause when people like what you’re doing there is no better
feeling in the world. Neil has just found out recently that he is making
heads turn in Europe as well as here in the States as one of Europe’s
leading country music magazines is about to do a review on his album.
This will be in print in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria some time this
year. There has also been positive news from Ireland and France. Neil
hopes to share more about himself through his music and would like to
thank all the radio stations that has been playing his songs. Finally,
take it from someone who knows, Neil is a great guy and has always been
a great father.
